At this time of year it is an important time to look at your security do’s and don’ts.
We always do regular checks on local crime and how we can assist you with your security needs.
Before we look at how you can improve your security at home, we want you to look at the “what not to do” list.
Here are a few of the very basic important things on the “not what to do” list.
- Don’t leave any window or doors unlocked – pulling them too does not always mean there locked, they are just pulled shut.
An intruder can easily put his hand through the letter box and push the inside handle down and boom they are in. If you think they could not reach it then your mistaken, most intruders will have something with them to either help reach the lock or to prize a door/window open. - Don’t leave things on show of any value.
It is very easy for window sales people to sell you doors and windows with good quality locks, but really all it needs is a bigger “hit” on the glass, reach in and grab a wallet, purse, handbag, ipod etc. - DO put your keys out of site of your front door.
There are criminals out there that look for a nice car on the driveway and with a long piece of wire ( coat hangers etc) or magnetic tipped rods ( the ones for people who have the habit of dropping keys and are very handy in retrieving them from drains ) . Once they have your keys, then vroom the car has gone .Going into the theft of cars from peoples property a bit more, what these cheeky people have been doing is abandoning the car in a road somewhere and leaving them for a few days before coming back to them, in case the car has had a tracker fitted to it. Cars are quite often stolen to order then shipped abroad.Always make sure that everybody knows where they are in case of a fire, they must always be easily got to and quickly. Find a place close to your door but out of site to keep your keys. - Don’t get your Christmas presents out on “show” too early
This attracts a potential intruder to be even more determined to get in. Why? Brand new items to be sold and are worth more when sold as they are not out of their wrappers yet. - Don’t think that you are unlikely to be broken into as you feel you have nothing worth taking – you do!
Any item of any value is worth something to somebody – if its just to feed a drug or drink habit, or a present to a loved one of theirs but cannot afford themselves.
Crime can shatter peoples lives, by thieves taking sentimental and irreplaceable gifts to coming home to a broken into property and not feeling safe again and all because a person has entered your house without permission.
How to help prevent a break in.
First of all it is very important to realize that thieves do not want to get caught !!
The major things to look at first is lighting.
Security lights are very good at illuminating an area that would normally be dark . Lighting up those dimly lit areas around your property brings unwanted attention to a would be intruder.
The biggest deterrent is a vicious dog, but not many of us like the thought of owning one of them.
So the next biggest security measure is getting an intruder alarm, an outside siren is both a visual and audible deterrent.
Inside your property you should have adequate protection by means of detection devices, these will react when an intruder steps foot inside and sends them running.
It is a commonly known thing that if your house is protected and a neighbour isn’t , then they will go for the “easy pickings”.
